A little Bruce Lee is not a bad thing. I watched a little of a "documentary" about him on a channel I would normally never watch after "supper" ( really our dinner, but after so many past acquaintances with these wonderful stories, dinner feels less homey and more formal, so henceforth "supper" takes its place) with my manchild (aka my son). I was a fan of Bruce Lee in my youth! It was like wow! A really cool Chinese guy! I was amazed! Then followed, Shaolin, and it was like I needed to get my practice on by chopping my little brother, sparring with uncles and hacking cousins - just happily pretending I was a great, fabulous and very cute (though wannabe) martial artist! Those were my adventures!

This night I have started reading a book by an author known to me! How exciting is that- maybe I can get her to stop by with an interview-

I am often visiting the New York Public Library website. I find it tremendously valuable in many ways. It is a creative compendium of media. I like to look up digital images that can be inspirational for whatever I am thinking about for the day. Retro is always in stye and I think we all can learn something from the past. This is especially true for fashion. Well made clothing rules follow tried and true designs. The photo above from Andre Studios as part of a collection of sketches that can be found on the NYPL site in collaboration with the Fashion Institute of Technology is truly a wonderful public gift-free-priceless!

Take a look for yourself! Print out one or more and hang them! Together they can form a lovely decoration stylishly hung on a wall.

Science projects, spooky, and other....well....things

This past holiday season has been very peaceful. I decided early on in the season that I would keep it all very simple. Hardship can inspire genuine creativity and keep the spirit festive, thankful and humble. I must truly say with all earnest that I felt most truly blessed this past year.

My eldest daughter moved out of our home yesterday into an apartment she will share with a sorority sister in Brooklyn and I feel most proud and prayerful all at once. Th excitment and unexpected lay before her. but, I remind her that she can return if she needs. She responds by stating casually, "Mom, don't worry, I'll see you guys on Sunday!" So, it's just the two days! Patience, I say. The time between visits will get longer. And, I guess my prayers will be more fervent. Talking to God will fit in with the rest of the days activities- woke up, chat with God, take the bus, chat with God, walk the dog, chat with God, etc. Please keep my babies safe!

And so this moves me on to our holiday picture. I wanted this one to be perfect before Kesia moved.

Greetings-
I have been MIA for a while now. How the time flies! Of course I have been busy because what parent isn't! And, the days seem to be whooshing by. Caring for my family seems to be the highlight of my days as the cooler weather here in New York ( Staten Island, that is) is just starting to kick in. And, frankly, I am ecstatic for it. The long indian summer has been great for extending the chores and outdoor enjoyment that comes with warmer weather in autumn. But, I feel a most strong procrastination setting in when preparing for the holidays, henceforth, I am later than usual with my celebration preparations. I have never been an early preparer. I never seem to have enough hours in the day. This means that, happily, I always have something creative or productive to look forward to in my days.

Now, I welcome winter with a smile! Time to slow things down..... and enjoy the season.

I have been trying to think of a way to make some extra money while I'm home and have accidentally fallen into making hats after experimenting with a crocheted beret. I am in love with making this hat. I think this is how artisans feel when they are making something they love. I get this feeling, that is the I created a masterpiece feeling, when I cook something wonderfully delicious and satisfying. I now feel like this with this hat. It is just a simple beret with a lovely removable flower. But, the magic happens when you put it on. It is transforming! Cute and slouchy and classy all in one! I love it! I want to make me one in many colors but I presently have orders to fill for others and that, excitedly, will have to put my own wishes to wait. I am happy to make something that ladies love enough to purchase from me and incorporate into their dress style. This feeling is very good for one's inner creative expression!

I have been trying my hand skills at creating those flowers I learned from Teresa a couple of days ago. And, last minute, no, really it was Thursday to be exact. I found out that a relative is having a baby shower this Saturday. I need quick gifts. I immediately thought of Martha who always has fresh and inspiring ideas for every occasion. This site has some really great ideas that could be created within a few hours to days. still, I don't think I had that kind of time neither. Handmade is definitely what I wanted to give because a handmade gift would be special for a newborn. But, seriously, I am short on time. Here's what I have already partially made from Lion Brand

A breakfast staple remix!!!

Coconut- Cinnamon Dutch Baby

adapted from Martha Stewart

3 tablespoons unsalted butter

3/4 cup of sweetened shredded coconut

1/3 cup Lyle's Golden Syrup

1/4 teaspoon ground ~~cardamom~~ cinnamon
(8/1/11 correction)

3 large eggs

3/4 cup milk

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large frying pan, like a cast iron skillet, put in the 3 tablespoons of butter and melt gently until slightly browned. Add coconut and cinnamon and gently toss to coat with the butter until very fragrant. Add the golden syrup and stir to coat the coconut. Turn off the heat a let the mixture sit while you prepare the dutch baby batter.

In a medium sized bowl, combine the salt, flour, eggs and milk and whisk to combine the ingredients. Pour the batter into the frying pan over the coconut mixture and place in the hot oven and bake for about 20- 25 minutes. Do not check the dutch baby until at least 20 minutes has passed. The dutch baby should be nicely browned around the edges, puffy and slight colored on the top.

Cool to just room temperature and slice. Flip the slice when you plate it and sprinkle liberally with confectioner's sugar. It's very good !

Learning to make a crochet flower

I really want to learn to make crochet flowers. I love flowers! They are beautiful on a painter's canvas, as pretty fabric flowers, and even as the faux kind they are extraordinairily beautiful when they are very good quality. I especially love the crepe paper ones-they can take your breath away! So, I thought, I might learn to make a crochet flower or a bunch of flowers.

To start my endeavor, I went to my favorite "go to" learning site for new yarn stitches, which would be Lion Brand yarn. It was here that I found the pattern I posted recently on the irish rose crochet flower. Okay, so that was part 1. Part 2 came about after reading the directions and realizing that I need a more visual approach on the how-to's of crochet flower making. So, off to my next "go to" site for learning, Ravelry.

At Ravelry, I came across Teresa, and on her site she has an excellent video that is uploaded on Youtube.com.

Here is her wonderful demonstration that I found, easy peasy-

So, I had to replay this video a number of times, which is okay for me, because unfortunately for me, I sometimes am an unfocused learner ( or in more lay terms-SLOW) and require repeat instructions. Fortunately, this is video and therefore I do not have to worry about getting on the teacher's nerves!

So this is my first attempt.

I loved the learning experience and I shall have another go at other "Crochet Geek" videos. But first, to practice my hand skill some, I will make more of these.

Oh! I am so excited! I am happy to say that my first green bean harvest is complete! I planted a green bean plant this past May in a large planter pot and this is what the "mother" blessed us with-

But you know what?

Every little bit counts, and really-

Aren't they gorgeous? I know it's small, but it is very significant! I am so proud (sniff, snuff)! They are all pretty perfect!

Also, I have made something very healthy and good to eat. Do you like kale soup? I love it!

Tonya's Kale Soup

(Please: Read the Recipe first)

1 small bunch of fresh kale, cut into small parts

1/2 can of diced tomatoes

3 medium potatoes peeled, and roughly chopped, big chunks

1 small vidalia onion, roughly chopped

2 cloves ( or more) garlic, finely chopped

1 tsp. of "Better Than Boullion" concentrate chicken broth

(comes in a jar, see pic)

1 tsp. of oregano

1/2 tsp. smoked paprika

1 tsp.sea salt

1/2 tsp. black pepper

1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes

1/4 tsp. dried coriander (the spice in a jar)

a couple of cups of boiled water to bring the level up to near the top of the crock pot

lots of grated pecorino romano cheese for a gooey topping

(of course the amount of cheese is optional, it's really to taste)

Some cooked pasta or rice (leftovers are great) for serving and completing the meal

Step1- Rinse kale and boil a pot of water for the stock.

Step 2- Saute onions, garlic for a minute. Then add kielbasa to the saute for 2-3 minutes until lightly browned.

Step 3- Add all the ingredients to the crock, except the water, red pepper flakes and cheese.

Step 4- Add the water to nearly filled.

Step 5- Very important! Turn your crock setting to low.

Step 6- Let cook for 3-4 hours. Longer will not do any harm. You can leave it and forget it

(you're gonna eat this today, though)

Step 7- Serve up a bowl with the cooked ahead rice or noodles, sprinkle on some red pepper flakes and as much cheese as you love. Eat heartily and enjoy!

Just kidding! Basia, does not like her food hot! Cool kibble, chicken chunks, raw broccoli, cubes of cheddar, and whole grain toast are her preferences!

I love to browse the internet looking for new blogs that I have yet to explore, well- new to me, that is. It is so much fun to keep abreast of what is going on in the craft world all over the World. I learned of the magazine above from Coco Rose Diaries and from Christy Tomlinson where so much lovely things are created. Truly inspiring.

I also visited through my internet window Rashida Coleman-Hale who has been busy, busy, busy from what I found her on her blog pages! Great and fabulous for her! I love it! I took this book out of the library and was quite happily surprised to see her featured within it's pages which I will devour over the next couple of days.

This beautiful rose image is from Lion Brand Yarn patterns. I am hoping to learn to make some beautiful crochet flowers this summer as one of the many projects I hope to spend time doing before the school year begins again. And I've missed you all..terribly. I know, I know. I should have written. Pleaseeee, forgive me. I have been forgivably very busy and preoccupied with life. It happens to the best of us. But, I'm back! And from a very stylish librarian to be, I have found out about this wonderful CHALLENGE! Oh it's really fabulous! I mean the thrill of all those sewing machines whirring through fabric daring to make something wonderful for the young loves in our lives.

January Days and Nights

Here is just a mish-mosh of things throughout the month. I haven't been faithfully blogging, because my job hunt takes first place now, which has me altogether in another mode (called hustle and bustle)

But, I have been trying my hand at a few things, take a moment, and have a look-

Cooking

Potato Scallion Salmon Cakes!

Freestyle Recipe

2-3 Boiled Russet potatoes, mashed

1 can of pink salmon, drained and mashed*

2-3 scallions, thinly sliced

1-2 teaspoons of Old Bay Seasoning

1 scant teaspoon of salt

1/2 teaspoon of black pepper

1/2 cup of bread crumbs, Italian, Panko or your favorite

1 whole egg, beaten

*- with the can of pink salmon, I just drain it and mash it well, bones, skin and all- but you can pick through it if you like

Heat (med-high) 1/2 cup of your favorite frying oil in a skillet. I sometimes mix extra virgin olive oil and canola.

Combine all the ingredients in a largish bowl and mix well. Form small patties in the palms of your hands and put on a plate until all the patties are formed.

Fry the patties in small batches, about 7 minutes per side. remove from skillet and place on paper toweling or bags to absorb excess fat.

Serve hot with ketchup or remoulade sauce (a fancy sauce, but remember, use what makes you happy!)

I was shopping this morning at the grocery store (aka Supermarket) and I saw some nicely packaged cube steaks and then a beautiful vision floated in my head of gorgeously spiced and buttery pan fried steak on portugese bread, lusciously coated with sweet onions. Sounds good? Yesss!

I brought the ingredients home and prayed I had all I needed. I knew that I had found the recipe for this delicious steak sammy but I could not remember who the author was...until...I walk through my front door and pass by my bookcase...my eyes glance at the cookbooks I had borrowed form the library and...then...bing! I remember and feel regret. Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman,
I returned it! NOOO! Realize...hey girl...it's ok...go to her website...recipe found!

and her Marlboro Man loves the sandwich (I am sure the sammy's fan base is huge now) !

So, I make it-

I have been away for some time. The going has been tough and down right stinky, but, the persevering spirit I have has continued to trudge on....and well here I am! Blessed among the blessed! And, now that I have completed GRADUATE SCHOOL, I am trying to kick up some of my past creativity, from a long time ago. I am talking juvenile stuff here.

Stuff like crochet, and dolls,

and drawing.

I used to love to draw when I was a young girl. I made 150 paper dolls that I played with faithfully and knew all their names. It's funny how my girls have the same thing going on now. They love their paper dolls. They are handmade. If they give me permission, I should like to let you see them yourself right here. Some time...

Anyways. I love to go to the public library in my neighborhood. When I go and take out materials, I feel like it's Christmas or my birthday because I can take home these things and the feeling I get from this activity is WAY better than shopping because I did not have to spend a thing on the trip. Ooohwee!

Seriously, cause I'm dead serious!

The Battle of the Click

It all happened one afternoon while I was on eBay. In a previous post here on this blog, I mentioned some little past treasures I had found and won on eBay. But, there is more to that story or event I shall call it. You see, There was this one item that I wished to win that was highly desired out of all the other bids. This was that item

The bidding got quite hectic at the end of the time period. I was sitting in my chair waiting, waiting, waiting, for the notification that I was losing. I held my ground at a high of $28.00! I was completely mad! I am thinking at the time, "Girl! You crazy, bidding that amount!" The bidding started at $5.___. I forget now, please don't quote me. But, it was low enough for me to manage the amount in addition to the other bids I was in. So, I waited for the notification, and the bidding ended. All of a sudden I see, "Sorry, you did not win...." blah, blah,blah, blah.......Big Sigh! And, the other bidder won at $30! $30!

I am feeling discouraged, sad, and just plain taunted. I mean I know that's what it's all about. This bid/lose thing. But, I could not get out of my head that winning bidder, whoever he or she was, whooping and a hollering, I won (my extreme or not so extreme thought, I mean, I really don't know)!

So, what's a person feeling jilted supposed to do? I mean, really. Well, she takes her jilted feelings over to amazon.com and purchases the same book for $3.95 plus shipping and handling and feels really, really good! Like so good that she's whooping and a hollering (well not exactly, it was more sinister like)!

And, I now have the ITEM in My Hands (yes, I am feeling a little immature right now).

So, this brings me to the part about why this book is special. Here are a few pics. Mind you, they are not the best pics, I was, shaking with excitement-

Cool! I mean retro, but so stylish and lady like. These magazines remind me of how when I was a young girl and teen, I would pour over these magazines and others like Essence and Ebony just studying the fashions and beauty spreads. These remembrances have kicked up in me a passion to explore needlecraft arts again. I personally think that if Good Housekeeping were to do it again, I would definitely be a subscriber. Oh, many wishes!

So, I will probably buy or bid for more of these magazines. I mean they are just chock full of wonderful patterns and tips for knitters, crocheters, and sewers. I love the styles and home ideas.

Does my story/event sound familiar? This event brought out many things in me, which, also brings me to the thought on how many lessons I have learned from this experience. Too many!

And I think I may have found a room to sew in. The pantry which was the sole space for our family refrigerator, which has now been moved to the kitchen, seems to have the potential to become a sewing/inspiration room, or more like nook, for me. I shall report my progress in future posts.

Apricot Tart

I wanted to make a dessert. I did want to try something other than my usual treats. No chocolate chip cookies. No flan (I love it, no all my children do not like it so much). No lemon cake (we eat a lot of lemon baked goodies, because I love the freshness, but my children are just tired of lemon cake), And, so that left me either turning the pages of my cookbooks which is limiting but full of lovely suggestions. Or, go to Martha, who is easy to access, and with a few well thought out searches and a bit of finger pressing patience, you can have a great recipe with just a press of the print icon and you are ready to go. I wanted to try a tart. But, I wanted to keep it very easy. Nothing complicated that would make me give up all hope to try it again. Not to mention how intimidated I am by pie crusts. The best reason for my fear of making them is that I do not own a food processor which I keep hearing makes doing pie crusts completely fearless (not to sure about this though). I am a big advocate of keep it cold and use your hands; to me, by far, my best equipment.

This is a pretty simple recipe. The crust is delicious and the tart was pretty good.

I am very proud of my first tart making experience. I brought it to work with me. It was my last day there and the responses I received were very kind.With enthusiasm and encouragement, my fellow coworkers praised my efforts. And I was thankful. But for my own future reference, I would definitely put less applesauce on the tart or use very thick apple butter. I believe that I would prefer that texture to the sauce. But, I still think, Bravo me!

I have found out about this talented musician and singer most recently these past few months. And I love the music she creates. Music can be inspired by both good and bad in life. But, it should motivate in its listeners understanding or agreement or action in a positive and sharing way. There is a book that I am reading now called "Little Bee" by Chris Cleave that tells about a young Nigerian woman's life concerning the issues Nneka sings about. If you have time in your summer reading (and listening) get your copy of both-music by Nneka and Little Bee.

Well, today is a record high day! 97 and with the humidity caressing you, the feel like temperature is 105!!!! Triple digits, friends. And I left the house today with the girls because we had comps to SI Yankee Kids day. Yeah! A very nice turnout with those giant blowup things that the kids love to "get on or in", playing frisbee, hula hoop, and water balloon toss with the team members. Fabulous. Did anyone notice that ball players are extremely handsome?

My sons Graduation from High School and college bound

We have a pumpkin growing in our backyard! I absentmindedly tossed a rotted pumpkin in our yard, left it, it magically and mysteriously was planted (I assume by some of the wonderful backyard animals and magical creatures lurking around) and Viola! Or, Presto! Or, Sha-Bam! (etc., etc.-please feel free to fill in your favorite magical word there) Pumpkin growing (high singing voice)!

Another baby blanket completed. OMgosh, I am into crochet. You can do it in your bed, propped up on pillows watching your favorite movies or tv series. And I so feel like I am getting things done when I crochet in bed.

Spring Cleaning

I live my life late. I am constantly backed up with chores. Why? Because I am always hanging out with Procrastination. Kinda my bestie for a while now. I will have to get me a better, more productive new friend.
So, I have begun spring cleaning in July. I am trying to avoid using the products that are bad for the environment and going the clean but natural route. Therefore, my cleaning bucket contains

Mrs. Meyers wonderful smelling (aromatherapy for the home) household cleaners. They work on dirt. And, they make me feel upbeat and no sick feeling while I get the jobs done. Yes, JOBS. I think with all the work I have to do, I will be cleaning clearly until the fall.

I haven't gone to see the new Twilight Eclipse movie yet. And, I don't think I will. Priorities come first. And, I usually fit mine somewhere around next to last depending on how highly I need it. Priority list looks something like

3. Eat
4. Hygiene

6. Work (huh?)

I am considering the purchase of a ceiling fan for my living room. I initially wanted to purchase the fans for all the rooms in the house that have flat ceilings, no angles or close by walls near the ceiling fixtures. But, after reading about ceiling fans on the This Old House website, I found out that really reliable ceilings fans are an investment and so this has prompted me to rethink my budget. Alas, I can only afford one for now.

I am kinda nervous about installing a ceiling fan. Electricity gives me the yikes. Like, Yikes! I could get electrocuted! Or, Yikes! I might DIIIIIEEEE! So, I thought it would be smart to seek some professional help from the experts. Free professional advice from the old house experts-

I have joined a "twilight" readers club on facebook. I realize that I am very late in the game. But, hey, I have a good excuse,or should I say excuses. Grad school, single-parent mom, work, household work, etc. You know what I am talking about. Plate full and over flowing even though I want to cut down my life portions, the heaping servings keep coming from all directions.

Okay, so, yes, I am finally getting a chance to read "the saga". It's pretty non-threatening reading intellectually. I mean it's terrifically no pressure, just pure entertainment. Which is just what I need right now. I have to force myself to practically remember that it is not affiliated with journal articles or coursework, and then it's easy to slip off into the words and characters.

And, I may say now, that I cheated a bit. Okay, quite a lot. I have watched

So, I can almost say that I have been put up to speed. I get the gist. Now I have to read the books for the meat and potatoes of the saga.

At first, I thought the reading was too lovey dovey, but I have decided to give them a decent go to the end. I am going to try........I will. And, I will keep you informed to let you know if I did.

Which brings me to what I want to put more of on my life plate and move other portions off for-

Sewing, crochet, recipe delving and tasting, making things.

I have been trying to push my crafting and sewing interest to higher levels of actually doing as opposed to all the studying of ideas, patterns, and designs. It is the actual doing I have realized (no really) that gives the interest meaning.

And, do you know how hard it is to take out or redo a project and not leave it as it is? That takes a lot of strength. I am making a round crochet pillow. Actually two. And I did not like the first outcome, so I pulled out the stitches to begin again. But, the second time around it is faster work, I am glad to say. I just don't know what will be the outcome again. High hopes!

Bread and Butter......pickles

I came across a recipe I found in the June 2010 issue of Country Living for Bread and Butter Pickles which I love. I read the ingredients and adapted it to my own cupboard as I didn't have a few spices but I believe the spices I have will not make the taste different just more personal. The recipe-

Bread and Butter Pickles

adapted from the recipe by Jason Robinson in Country Living Magazine

1 pound Kirby cucumbers, sliced 1/4 inch thick

1 large sweet, onion, thinly sliced into 1/2 inch pieces

1/4 cup of kosher salt

1 cup sugar

1/2 cup distilled vinegar

okay for my adaptations-

1 tablespoon of dry mustard

2 teaspoons of Lawry's lemon pepper seasoning

2 teaspoons finely chopped dill

3 whole cloves of garlic, peeled

1. In a medium bowl, combine cucumbers, onion, and salt; mix well. Cover mixture with ice and let sit out for 2 hours.

* If you do not have ice, like me today, cover the mixture with a plate large enough to fit over your bowl and refrigerate for 2 hours.

2. In a pot, bring sugar, vinegar and spices to a boil. Strain cucumbers (or drain with slotted spoon as I did) and add to pot. Return mixture to a boil, then remove from heat and let cool.

* At this point try not to eat any- Okay eat some because they are smelling that good. I couldn't resist!Now-

3. Store pickles, and hopefully there's quite a bit left, in a covered container for up to 3 weeks. But, I guarantee, they will not even last that long!

Baby Blanket

This blanket was made using a pattern for download (FREE) on Alicia Paulson's Blog, Posie Gets Cozy . I did have some difficulty creating the edge that was given in the pattern but I think this was from my lack of experience as a crocheter (?). Instead, I used a shell border and I think it still looks so nice. I love the yarn color which is the brand (Blue Sky Alpacas) suggested in the pattern, and you can buy from Dancing Ewe Yarns. Folks, good yarn ain't cheap! But, with these beautiful results, I realize that it sure is worth it. Hey, in the picture the yarn is organic cotton. Very soft!

Take your Daughters and Sons to Work at the College of Staten Island. Cute and very lucky kids. They had a phenomenal day! Really tasty continental breakfast, loads of activities and privileges, pizza and cupcake party, and roam (I think in theory) of the campus!

I tried no excuses

I did. But there are just things in life that can consume one's time. I have been meaning to post this a few days ago but my camera can no longer upload images for some strange reason onto my computer so I had to figure out what I could do. I almost paid for an answer online and then thought better of it. While doing my observation school hours, I heard my cooperating teacher, Mrs. Rodriguez, talk about a thumb drive and a pop went into my head that shouted "Card Reader!" I went to Radio Shack on Saturday to pick it up (sorry Staples, you were not on the way to grocery shopping) and I finally uploaded the pictures. Excitement!
So back to no excuses. I can't do it all. I try real hard to every day. What I get done is nothing short of those precious blessings from above. Housework, family, children, work and graduate school. Know what I mean. CONSUMING. Although, I did give myself a break on April 1. I went to the Martha Stewart Stitchfest to celebrate her newest book.

It was a great night with wine and hors d'oeuvers that were so delicious. And the wonderful examples of stitch projects that are displayed beautifully throughout the book were at her offices where the Stitchfest was held.

I made acquaintances. We all stitched together!

On WYNC, New York Public Radio, I continued to listen about the awful devastation facing the people in Haiti. I have been listening, viewing, and reading since the beginning. What is apparent to me is my response continues to be as sorrowful as it was upon my initial hearing. As with all natural disasters you pray and do what you can to help others in need. But, when listening to WYNC this morning I overheard a commentator state that this country's recovery is more troubling because of the lack of Haitian people who have advanced education and degrees in which the country can utilize to mobilize their country out of the devastation. The economic plight of the country will only increase due this. And this knowledge mobilizes me as a teacher. I am mobilized for change. I am .

Cinnamon Bread

This is the best cinnamon bread you are ever gonna eat. The outside is so crusty and sweet from the cinnamon sugar mix. And the inside has a really moist crumb. It really is divine.

When your heart is broken

I have a broken heart. I do not know really what that means except for me it means that I am in, at times, emotional ups and downs. The ups and downs come and go. I have been in this situation many times, but it always seems to feel the same no matter your age. I know that at some point I will not be so subject to the bursts of tears or questions that come without warning upon my person. I know it is because as one keen friend put it that I am "hurting" as she so wisely said. At forty, it is as horrible as it can be at sixteen, twenty-four, and at thirty-five. The truth. But, I may not have control over when the bursts of emotional ups and downs happen, as so much the control I have as to what I do to avail myself of how I let them impact who I am and what I do in my life. That's what keeps me going. I am a mom, a sister, a friend, a daughter, a creative person, a teacher, a Christian. I can go on and on. And that's amzing to me.Those thoughts in my head that tell me of the love and care that surrounds my life. Although, there are the sneaky thoughts that try to undermine the the thoughts of life that are pleasing and encouraging to my being, I know with each trial, I am better and stronger than times past.
I hope you all get what I am saying. It's not easy. Time heals all wounds. Truth. Do the things you LOVE doing. Eat, write, read, watch movie after movie, go shopping, learn new things, become an activist, improve your professional life, call friends, take a long walk, cry when it comes (it heals you), believe you are so special and wonderful and Beautiful. Forgive people, this is especially hard with cowards, Oops! I was trying to avoid saying bad things about the person, but I slipped. Don't be vulgar.Forget about the negative thoughts that pervade my mind (or better steer from them with "self-talk"). This is life. Value you!

Be Thankful that here I was given another day. By God, my Father, the Giver, the Healer.

Sunday Braiding (pt II)

This is weekend hair braiding. It was getting late on Saturday. When this happens, we finish braids on Sunday evening after church service or before afternoon church service. I usually do a simple style. The special occasion gets more braids. This is a school style to make hair styling easy for us during the hectic weekdays ahead. It's just brush to smooth and we're done!

Saturday hair rituals with my girls

Every Saturday, I wash, blow -dry, and braid my two younger daughters hair. They have a lot of hair. It is a ritual that I feel is important. A time to connect with them. To build loving memories by sharing talk, singing, debating, and learning together. In the end, we all appreciate the outcome. I have two great hair models.

The New Year 2010

I always have a hard time when then New Year rolls in. My mind does a jog back in time to all the things I did not get to do last year and applies these to the upcoming months ahead for my never ending list of possibilities for the New Year.

This is a blessed time in my life. I am doing things I never thought I would be doing. Living a life that I never thought I would be living and I am so thankful to God for the blessings He has showered upon my family and me.

Of course, there are the travels in life where you can feel like you have just been flung from a cliff with chains wrapped and locked on your body and you sink down, down, down, into an abyss of doubting despair. Then remembering, God would not put on me more than I can bear. How uplifting that thought is! That is what I think about when I feel overwhelmed. I am blessed!

Then there is family. Uncles, aunts, grandparents, brothers and sisters. God gave us families. I love mine. Unique and then again much in common with others.

This picture was taken after the girls came back from shopping for these dolls with Grandpa. Their first shopping stop was at the major children's toy store in our town. I have weaned my children from this store, and we have come to appreciate handmade or unique, personal toys to play with.

I have this book. I have not used it yet, but it has been poured over again and again. It is my hope to be able to make my girls something from this little book this year before they out grow dolls (Noooo!).

I am reading some history these days. I mean, it's important to me. I have been working on knowing about my ancestry and the History of Africans and mixed-race people with African ancestry in America. I found this book at my college bookstore on the clearance shelves. It has become a very invaluable resource in genealogy research.

I needed to write a moment. Sometimes, you just have a day which starts out okay, but doesn't end so great. I don't have this type of day too often, thank goodness, but when they come, they can be emotional for me.

Yeah, I'm sensitive. I usually don't let things get to me but, I am not great at all socially. I am socially inept, but I try to make up for it by encouraging humor and kindness in my life. But sometimes you just can't help things, even when you try hard to keep from collasping. I collapsed today. I definitely regret it but felt overwhelmed by it. So goes...

This is a really fun website. I have seen it on some of the other blogs I love to visit (like this one http://rosylittlethings.typepad.com/posie_gets_cozy/). And what they say is so true; this site is very absorbing! I could literally spend HOURS making different collages. I like it because I can appreciate fancy without having to go broke! (No matter, I can't afford dem fancy duds no way).

By the way, I am totally trying to get through this semester ( I am noticing that I spell this word incorrectly every time I type it). I literally can't wait until school is over. I mean the time I graduate from Graduate School. I have two more or three more semesters and it can't come quick enough.

Enough. I am so beat. I have been wanting to just get really creative and cook. I have been getting into buying cookbooks again-

I know it's a book of chinese cookery, but I like to try lots of new and different recipes. And, I will definitely post a dish from the book when I make a dish. I have browsed over some of the recipes already and they look absolutely doable. I found this book at the Barnes & Nobles bookstore on the CSI campus for very below retail at clearance. I love a cook book bargain!

Wow time flies

I'm just stopping by. I've been working hard this semester (trying to) and things are nearly at the end and the BIG PUSH continues for grades and insight to learning the craft, which in my case is education. And after constantly reminding myself of the blog I have finally come to it. To write here and empty my brain a bit. Sometimes I feel guilty for taking this time to share here. I forget how truly nice this is to write in my blog space. I have lots to share and I have been deciding on the best way to present some pics I have been taking. A lot of it is food because cooking takes up a lot of my day. And then there is family because that is my life. Hope you all enjoy these.....

So,

Today I thought I would do something for the girls.

They love paper dolls, and I found this site after a quick search on google for paper dolls that are just as lovely as they can be.

I printed out the paper dolls for my girls and they spent the whole day cutting out the dolls and not once all day did I hear that they were bored or tired from all the cutting. They just kept saying how cute the dolls were and the outfits made the dolls even cuter! I even made holders for the dolls and their outfits by printing out a doll on cardstock and attaching a back to make a folder to hold each doll so their outfits can be kept together with them.

I go back to school next week and I am trying to do as many things to nurture my creative side and bring about less stress in my life. I am hoping these activities will encourage me to keep up this part of my life so that I can be less of a school stressed mom.

Putting yourself first and remembering to take time out to do the things that interest you or enhance you is important and I've have fallen away from this, but I am trying to get back on that ideal.

I Love the blog of Alicia Paulson, and I have decided to do a project
from that site. I ordered the pdf pattern and materials which I pickup at the post office tomorrow since this was the day my girls and I said we would stay in all day (I know it's summer but somethings needed to be done), therefore, I could not convince them that mom needed to go and pickup the materials at the post office right away because they wanted to stay at home and cut out the paper dolls. WOW!

I hope I can do a good job on the project and look forward to putting up pictures soon.

Rice Pudding, look for this vintage book for the recipe. I suggest you buy the book because it has the most authentic dishes from Puerto Rican cookery, if you love Hispanic food, like me.
This book was given to me by my mom and I have loved the book so much ever since. I have made a few changes to the rice pudding recipe. I add sweetened coconut and sometimes instead of raisins I add dried cranberries or other dried fruit and it tastes delicious. I also use sweetened condensed milk instead of the milk and sugar, it just makes it simpler.
